OnePlus 11 doesn't snap in half in bend test, even though its rear glass cracks

Last year, both the OnePlus 10 Pro and the OnePlus 10T managed to crack and snap in half when subjected to the now-classic JerryRigEverything bend test. There's a smallish number of devices that have ever failed that test, and having two of them do it in a year isn't a great ad for the brand's focus on durability, even though these tests are way more extreme than what most people might subject their phones to in day-to-day life (unless you like to put it in your back pocket, caseless, and have a tendency to forget it's there and sit on it). So, with all this in mind, you're probably...

It's official: Nothing Phone (2) will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series chipset

Nothing didn't want to be left out of the media spotlight this week what with all the announcements happening at MWC in Barcelona, so it started its teaser campaign for the upcoming Phone (2) in earnest. We're expecting to be drip-fed tidbits of information about the new device over the next few weeks or months, since that's a strategy that Nothing CEO Carl Pei loves and has employed many times before, including at OnePlus before founding Nothing. It all starts with the chipset. The Nothing Phone (2) will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 series. Nothing Phone (1) Unfortunately the...

Dell refreshes XPS desktop, announces updates to XPS 15 and 17 laptops

Dell has begun refreshing its popular XPS lineup of desktops and laptops with the latest mobile processors and GPUs. These updates mostly focus on chip upgrades, suggesting only mild improvements to the series that shouldn't make owners of last year's models very envious.

Dell's XPS 17 and 15 laptops will be available on March 2, a Dell rep confirmed to Ars Technica. Dell will offer each with up to an Intel Core i9-13900H but also support i5 and i7 options.

Intel's 13th Gen H-series mobile chips don't bring massive upgrades over their 12th Gen counterparts. The i9-13900H has six Performance cores, eight Efficient cores, 20 threads, and 24MB of cache. It supports clock speeds of 1.9-5.4 GHz. The i9-12900H we tested in last year's Dell XPS 15 has similar specs but clock speeds of 1.8-5 GHz.

A Swiss IT manager’s 500-piece vintage Apple collection is going up for auction

Apple Lisa computer

Apple's 1983 Lisa computer will be auctioned alongside other old-school Apple tech next month. (credit: Julien's Auctions)

Over 500 Apple computers and related accessories are being auctioned off next month online and in Beverley Hills, California. The auction will feature numerous products dating from 1977 to 2008, including Macintosh systems from the '80s, more modern machines like the 2001 iMac G3, and old-school accessories like RH Electronics' Mac N' Frost external fan and surge protector.

Auction house Julien's Auctions has dabbled in Apple auctions before. Sadly, that includes the auction of Steve Jobs' Birkenstocks for a disturbing $218,750. Its upcoming auction, announced last week and spotted by sites like PetaPixel, features classic Apple items accrued by Swiss collector Hanspeter Luzi.

Julien's will auction the Apple II Plus ('78-'82) with a monitor, printer, two disk drives, two gaming paddles, and a manual.

Google has gotten so cheap, employees now have to share desks

Google has gotten so cheap, employees now have to share desks

Enlarge (credit: Bloomberg via Getty Images)

Google's offices were once famous to outsiders as a whimsical, magical place full of giant playground slides, 24/7 staff masseuses, a huge selection of free food, and complimentary laundry service. Today, in the new, cost-cutting era of Google, some employees don't even get to have their own desks.

CNBC's Jennifer Elias obtained an internal document from Google's "Cloud" division, which declares, “Most Googlers will now share a desk with one other Googler.” The move is apparently part of a cost-cutting measure that will allow Google to “continue to invest in Cloud’s growth,” and will result in some buildings being vacated. CNBC says the new policy will apply to Google Cloud's biggest US locations, in Kirkland, Washington; New York City; San Francisco; Seattle; and Sunnyvale, California.

Rather than the humorous image of Google employees sitting shoulder-to-shoulder and fighting over desk space, employees are expected to alternate their desk usage from one day to the next. After the pandemic and the work-from-home trend, Google wants employees to visit the office twice a week on a "hybrid work" policy. So they'll be expected to partner with a desk buddy and set the rules for how they will share. Google's document says if you don't stick to your schedule you could end up without a desk; in that case, you'll have to work at an “overflow drop-in space.”

Keyboard DIYing is moving outside hobbyist circles—and that’s a good thing

Customiznig a mechanical keyboard

Enlarge (credit: Scharon Harding)

Last week, I visited a friend and, for the first time, saw a mechanical keyboard on her desk. This is someone I've known for decades and who's not into tech, so this was a surprise. But her job became partially remote since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, so she needed something comfortable with a numpad to use at home. The keyboard was a cheap, quick buy off Amazon that earned its keep by looking cute and being "so clicky," she informed me.

My friend isn't alone in her newfound use of mechanical switches. Demand for more tactile and durable typing, gaming, and number crunching has led to prebuilt mechanical keyboards being incredibly easy to find. And while they can still be extremely costly, newcomers like my friend are able to find sub-$100 options that enthusiasts may scoff at but still represent an upgrade over a membrane or laptop keyboard.

This widespread acceptance of mechanical keyboards has led to an even deeper corner of the hobby getting more attention of late: DIY customization.

ChatGPT-style search represents a 10x cost increase for Google, Microsoft

ChatGPT-style search represents a 10x cost increase for Google, Microsoft

Enlarge (credit: NurPhoto / Getty Images)

Is a ChatGPT-style search engine a good idea? The stock market certainly seems to think so, with it erasing $100 billion from Google's market value after the company's poor showing at its recent AI search event. Actually turning a chatbot into a viable business is going to be a challenge, though. Besides that fact, Google has had a chat search interface for seven years now—the Google Assistant—and the world's biggest advertising company has been unable to monetize it. And a new report from Reuters points out another monetary problem with generating a chat session for every search: That's going to cost a lot more to run compared to a traditional search engine.

Today Google search works by building a huge index of the web, and when you search for something, those index entries gets scanned and ranked and categorized, with the most relevant entries showing up in your search results. Google's results page actually tells you how long all of this takes when you search for something, and it's usually less than a second. A ChatGPT-style search engine would involve firing up a huge neutral network modeled on the human brain every time you run a search, generating a bunch of text and probably also querying that big search index for factual information. The back-and-forth nature of ChatGPT also means you'll probably be interacting with it for a lot longer than a fraction of a second.

All that extra processing is going to cost a lot more money. After speaking to Alphabet Chairman John Hennessy (Alphabet is Google's parent company) and several analysts, Reuters writes that "an exchange with AI known as a large language model likely costs 10 times more than a standard keyword search" and that it could represent "several billion dollars of extra costs."

Dealmaster: Best deals on smart home tech

(credit: August)

Whether you're just starting to smarten up your home or looking to add new Internet of Things (IoT) pieces to your existing smart home, Dealmaster is here with some terrific deals on everything from routers and doorbells to door locks and everything in between. If you're new to the smart home game, adding a video doorbell or smart lock, like Eufy's 2K Dual Camera doorbell or the August 4th Gen Smart Lock, will help you keep tabs on what's happening at your front door and give your family some extra security without requiring you to subscribe to a monitoring or alarm service. These are two of the best smart home investments I've made.

For more advanced users, adding smart lighting and smart switches can take your smart home to the next level, letting you turn off the lights from your couch, change to mood lighting when you're zoning out in front of the television, or pretend like someone's home with an automated lighting schedule when you're on vacation. Chrome 110 will automatically discard background tabs. Here’s how to stop it.

Enlarge (credit: Google)

Heads up, everybody: Chrome will start doing stuff to your permanently open tabs. Chrome version 110 is rolling out now, and on Windows, macOS, and Linux, the release comes with the new "Memory Saver" feature that will be automatically enabled. We first wrote about this when it hit the Chrome nightly build "Canary Channel" in December, but now the feature is rolling out to everyone.

Chrome has a reputation for gobbling up RAM, and Google seems to think the best way to combat that is to automatically shut down your tabs when they are "inactive." Google's explanation of the feature says, "When a tab is discarded, its title and favicon still appear in the tab strip but the page itself is gone, exactly as if the tab had been closed normally. If the user revisits that tab, the page will be reloaded automatically." Google says this technique will reduce Chrome's memory usage by "up to 40 percent," which sounds great, as long as it doesn't break anything or cause users to lose the state of their page.

As a support page outlines, Google has some use cases excluded from this feature:
