For months, there have been rumors that Apple would launch new, M2-based Macs—specifically MacBook Pro and Mac mini models with new M2 Pro or M2 Max chips—sometime before the end of this year. But now two usually reliable insiders and Apple CEO Tim Cook are signaling that those new computers will arrive sometime in early March instead.
During a recent call with investors last week, Cook began a sentence with "as we approach the holiday season, with our product lineup set," suggesting that there will be no new hardware announcements from Apple in 2022.
Further, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted several weeks back that he expects the new MacBook Pro models in early 2023.

Earlier this week, a couple of Reddit users reported that the power connectors for their expensive new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs had partially melted and that Nvidia was looking into the issue. Since then, at least nine additional Reddit users have posted about the same problem with the 16-pin power connector (a thread collecting all information on the problem is here).
Igor Wallossek of the German-language hardware site Igor's Lab has also performed additional testing, and said that the power adapter cable (rather than the GPUs or the 12VHPWR connector) may be to blame for the problems. The adapter, which is apparently manufactured by a company called Astron and was provided by Nvidia to all of its board partners, uses "a total of four thick 14AWG wires distributed over a total of six contacts," with a thin solder base that Wallossek says can be damaged easily when the cables are moved or bent.

"If, in the worst case, the two outer wires break off, the entire current in the middle flows through the remaining two wires," Wallossek wrote. "The fact that this then becomes really hot does not have to be explained separately."

Can Android manufacturers ship devices that run Android forks? That's a tough and scary question for OEMs to ask, and Google has probably liked it that way. The contracts Android OEMs sign with Google—which are needed to license the Play Store and other Google apps—says, flatly, "no forks." Google says forking Android would damage the Android ecosystem, so OEMs must pledge to never be involved in the production of a device that runs a fork of Android. Some regulatory bodies—namely in the EU—have ruled that the "no forks" clause of the Android contract is not legal and that Google can't punish OEMs that stray outside the walled garden. The EU doesn't control the whole world, though, so while Google can't punish manufacturers inside the EU, what happens in the rest of the world?
Google's anti-fork clause has always been a big problem for Amazon, whose Fire OS is the No. 1 Android fork out there. With most of the major tech manufacturers somehow involved in producing Android phones, tablets, TVs, laptops, cars, or watches, Amazon has always had to claw and scrape to find someone willing to make Fire devices. Amazon complained about this to the Competition Commission of India last week, saying, "At least seven OEMs have indicated that their ability to enter into a manufacturing relationship of this kind with Amazon is either blocked entirely or significantly limited (e.g., in terms of geographic scope) by their contractual commitments to Google." India is Android's biggest market, so any rulings there will be worth paying attention to.

A new report from Protocol's Janko Roettgers says that Google is caving on this restriction, at least for televisions. The report says that Google and Amazon have "struck a deal" allowing Android manufacturers to make TVs that run Fire TV OS, and that TCL, Xiaomi, and Hisense will offer products in both ecosystems. TCL has already announced the lovingly named "CF63K Fire TV series" of televisions—4K, 60 Hz Fire TV displays with Amazon Alexa. The company also makes sets with Android TV and Roku software. Xiaomi, a stalwart Android OEM, also announced a Fire TV set this May.

Citing a person familiar with the matter, The Information reports Apple plans to release a 16-inch model of the iPad Pro. Apple hopes to launch the product in the fourth quarter of next year—likely around the same time in 2023 that the M2 iPad Pro launched in 2022.
In our estimation, a 16-inch iPad Pro would probably be targeted specifically to creative professionals, and would probably not be a mass-market product in the same way as other iPad models are. Think of it like the Mac Pro or Pro Display XDR—a specialized product for a narrow but important audience.
The target buyers might use the new 16-inch tablet with the Apple Pencil for a larger working canvas in apps like Procreate, Affinity Designer, Adobe Illustrator, and so on.

Microsoft is still struggling to learn what exactly it takes to be a successful Android manufactuer. The company's first self-branded Android phones, the dual-screened Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2, have tried to resurrect Microsoft's mobile ambitions after the death of Windows Phone. They leave a lot to be desired, though, and the first version went through some embarrassing fire sales. An ongoing knock against the devices has also been Microsoft's very slow OS updates. Unlike, say, Windows and Windows Update, Google's expensive and labor-intensive Android update process puts the responsibility for updates on the hardware seller, and a big part of being a good Android OEM is how quickly you can navigate this complicated process. Microsoft is proving to not be good at this.
This week, Microsoft announced the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 are finally getting Android 12L, an OS update that came out in March. That puts that company at a more than seven-month update time, which is worst-in-class for a flagship device, especially for one costing the $1,499 Microsoft is charging for the Duo 2. The company took a prolonged 14 months to ship Android 11 to the Surface Duo, so at least it's improving!

Google has been pushing out a tool for removing personally identifiable information—or doxxing content—from its search results. It's a notable step for a firm that has long resisted individual moderation of search content, outside of broadly harmful or copyright-violating material. But whether it works for you or not depends on many factors.
As with almost all Google features and products, you may not immediately have access to Google's new removal process. If you do, though, you should be able to click the three dots next to a web search result (while signed in), or in a Google mobile app, to pull up "About this result." Among the options you can click at the bottom of a pop-up are "Remove result." Take note, though, that this button is much more intent than immediate action—Google suggests a response time of "a few days."
Google's blog post about this tool, updated in late September, notes that "Starting early next year," you can request regular alerts for when your personal identifying information (PII) appears in new search results, allowing for quicker reporting and potential removal.

Even virtual reality's biggest boosters may hesitate at the idea of spending nearly $1,500 for the Meta Quest Pro without trying it first. Fortunately, a retail partnership means that people can try the upcoming Quest Pro at select Best Buy locations during weekend demos.
After checking out one of those demos, though, we came away largely unimpressed with our first impressions. Even if the Quest Pro's new features end up justifying its massive price (and more time with a retail unit later this week should help answer that question fully), our retail demo did not put Meta's best foot forward.
Upon entering Best Buy in Columbia, Maryland, on Sunday, I didn't find any signage suggesting that there was any special VR demo going on inside the store. Instead, I had to search the aisles until I found a lonely Quest display in an unloved back corner of the store, complete with a Quest 2 and Quest Pro under glass. Nearby, a demo staffer leaned on a counter playing with his phone next to a demo unit in a charging stand. When I approached, he said I was the first person all weekend who had expressed any interest in a demo (though one more came to see what it was about while I was in the headset).

A Swedish machine learning researcher named Emil Wallner has released a free web tool called Palette.fm that automatically colorizes black-and-white photos using AI. After uploading a photo, users can choose a color filter or refine the colors using a written text description.
Palette.fm uses a deep learning model to classify images, which guides its initial guesses for the colors of objects in a photo or illustration. "I’ve made a custom AI model that uses the image and text to generate a colorization," Wallner wrote in a message to Ars. "One model creates the text and the other takes the image and the text to generate the colorization."
After you upload an image, the site's sleek interface provides an estimated caption (description) of what it thinks it sees in the picture. If you don't like any of the preset color filters, you can click the pencil icon to edit the caption yourself, which guides the colorization model using a text prompt.

The Pixel 7 might be Google's first-ever flagship smartphone sequel.
That might seem like a strange thing to say about "version 7" of a smartphone, but before now, every flagship Pixel has switched manufacturers or used an all-new design from year to year. This strategy is the exact opposite of the one used by the larger, more serious hardware companies like Apple or Samsung, from which you can expect steady, iterative smartphone designs, with big redesigns coming every few years. When you're scrambling to build a smartphone from scratch every year, it's hard to do much in the way of error correction, improvements, or adjusting to customer feedback.
The Pixel 6 Pro was already the best Android phone you could buy, so Google didn't have to do too much to turn in a good smartphone this year. All the important bits from the Pixel 6 are here, like the category-leading price tag, great camera, and speedy, clean software. But even with that solid base, Google did a good job of fixing some of our minor complaints about the Pixel 6. There's no reason to upgrade if you have a Pixel 6, but an actual "version 2" of Google's flagship smartphone might entice more people to try the brand.

Evans Hankey, Apple vice president of industrial design since 2019, has announced plans to leave the company in the coming months. Apple confirmed her impending departure to Bloomberg.
She has been sitting in the post of hardware design lead once famously held by Jony Ive. Prior to taking the role, Hankey reported to Ive for several years. Since 2019 she has reported to Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer. She manages dozens of industrial designers at the company. Whereas Ive once oversaw both industrial and software design, Hankey's responsibility was on the hardware side only. Apple's head of software design, Alan Dye, will remain in his role, according to sources that spoke with Bloomberg.
Hankey announced her departure this week, saying she will stay for six months while Apple works out its future plans for the industrial design team. She has not publicly said what her next move is. Her role was also held for a short time by designer Richard Howarth from 2015 to 2017. Hankey took it on around the time of Ive's departure from the company just three years ago. Howarth is still with the company and could be a candidate to replace Hankey.

Installing Steam on a Linux system just got a little easier, at least if you can install a Snap package. Ubuntu-maker Canonical announced today that its Steam Snap supports "bleeding edge" Mesa graphics APIs, with more improvements coming soon.
Snaps are self-contained packages that are easier for users to install without command lines and also contain the other programs and libraries they rely on, preventing conflicts between the versions of installed software applications (i.e., dependency hell). They're theoretically easier to update through a store app and are sandboxed from the rest of the system. They're also not universally appreciated in the greater Linux community, as they're pushed primarily by Canonical through its Snap Store and can reduce the performance of some apps.
Canonical worked with Steam-creator Valve to create the Steam Snap in "Early Access" in March. It bakes in the Mesa drivers and Proton and Wine wrappers needed for some Windows-via-Linux games, resolves the 32-bit/64-bit discrepancies for certain libraries, and handles the other necessary items that users would typically be pulling in via command-line and private repositories.
