Apple releases iOS 12.5.6, fixing security issue for older devices

Today Apple has issued a new software update, but this one is a bit special, as it's intended for the older models that the company doesn't support anymore - not with its latest iOS builds at least. We're talking about iOS 12.5.6, which is already going out to those iPhones and iPads stuck on the iOS 12 branch, including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, original iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and even the 6th gen iPod touch. The new update's build number is 16H71, and it addresses a security vulnerability in WebKit which leads to arbitrary code execution and Apple says...

Leaked Switch-esque portable from Logitech could be great for streaming, emulation

Logitech is allegedly working on a handheld, Android-powered gaming console.

Enlarge / Logitech is allegedly working on a handheld, Android-powered gaming console. (credit: Evan Blass)

There are many Nintendo-Switch-style, Android-powered gaming handhelds out there, usually available as imports on eBay or AliExpress. Some, like the AYN Odin, are fairly well-regarded. Others, like the Retroid Pocket 2+, are less good, but they’re so cheap that they’re still worth buying for people who want a portable console for old-school game console emulators. But it's rare for any of them to have backing from a major company, reliable hardware and warranty support, or clear software update policies (beyond occasional Android version updates or support from alternate Android distributions).

That's why the rumors of a Switch-like, Android-based portable from Logitech caught our eye. Originally teased by prolific leaker Evan Blass (and preserved by The Verge following a DMCA takedown), the handheld is definitely reminiscent of a Switch Lite. It has four face buttons (arranged Xbox-style with the "A" on the bottom and "B" on the right, rather than Nintendo-style with these buttons reversed), left and right shoulder buttons and triggers, asymmetrical dual joysticks, a D-pad, and four other face buttons for various system functions. But the device appears to run a customized version of Android with full Google Play access, and it seems to have built-in access to Microsoft's, Nvidia's, and Valve's game streaming services for portable PC gaming.

Blass points out that the handheld is likely the fruit of a recently announced collaboration between Logitech and Chinese tech company Tencent. In early August, the companies said they would "combine Logitech G’s expertise in hardware with Tencent Games’ expertise in software services" to create a streaming-focused handheld gaming console at some undisclosed future date.

Next iPhone SE to look like the iPhone XR, iPhone 14 Pro to get new ultrawide camera

The next iPhone SE will finally drop its current design and switch to one that will allegedly be identical to that of the iPhone XR from 2018. That is, if a new rumor on the matter is to be believed. Its source is Jon Prosser, talking on the Geared Up podcast, and he has provided reliable information in the past, so maybe this does in fact pan out. But you probably shouldn't get the bubbly ready just yet, as there was a new iPhone SE launched earlier this year, and it came two years after its predecessor. And thus, if Apple keeps the same release pacing for this series, it means the new...

SmartDry’s useful laundry sensor to be cloud-bricked next month

The SmartDry laundry sensor was widely regarded as a useful smart home gadget that saved money and time. When its owners' servers go dark at the end of September, users face a useless device or a notable DIY journey.

Enlarge / The SmartDry laundry sensor was widely regarded as a useful smart home gadget that saved money and time. When its owners' servers go dark at the end of September, users face a useless device or a notable DIY journey. (credit: Getty Images)

SmartDry was a smart home product that did something useful: tell you when your clothes in your dryer were actually dry.

A small pack mounted inside nearly any dryer drum could prevent clothes from shrinking, save you energy costs (at least $60 per year, the marketing claimed), and even warn you about clogged vents causing high heat—or, much worse, gas buildup. A second-generation version could even turn off your gas dryer automatically. Reviewers greatly preferred it to their own dryers' unpredictable dryness sensors.

The problem is that SmartDry alerted you to dry clothing by connecting to your home's Wi-Fi; the device sent a message to parent company Connected Life's servers and then relayed that message to your smartphone. But Connected Life Labs is closing, discontinuing SmartDry, and shutting down its servers on September 30. After that, "cloud services will cease operations and the product apps will no longer be supported."

Trademark filing for “Reality Pro” suggests Apple’s headset is on the way

Trademarks have been filed for "Reality One," "Reality Pro," and "Reality Processor" ahead of Apple's plans to launch a mixed reality headset, according to a report in Bloomberg.

The trademarks were filed by legal firms (not Apple itself) in the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, and Costa Rica. Apple has turned to the same firms to secure other trademarks in the past.

The filings have not been traced directly to Apple, but they fit well with prior leaks that Apple was considering naming its AR/VR operating system realityOS, rOS, or something along those lines—in fact, a trademark filing for realityOS previously appeared earlier this year. The company already offers a developer framework called RealityKit for iOS apps, which will likely be the basis for some future headset applications. Apple employees have used the word "reality" to refer to the upcoming headset internally before, according to the report.

Top 10 trending phones of week 34

Apple's official confirmation of its September 7 iPhone 14 series event was the key event to influence this week's trending chart. Walmart lists a 30TB portable SSD for $39. It is, naturally, a scam

If someone tries to sell you 30TB of solid-state storage for less than $40, consider turning around and running away, no matter how many clip-art rockets they use in their pictures.

It feels like high-capacity SSDs are getting cheaper all the time, but in the words of a security researcher known as Ray Redacted on Twitter, there are still some deals that are too good to be true. In the spirit of discovery, he bought a "30TB" external SSD from AliExpress for $31.40, which also happens to be listed on Walmart's website for $39 (I am linking it for educational and entertainment value, please do not buy it).

On the inside, this "SSD" looks like two small-capacity microSD cards hot glued to a USB 2.0-capable board. This board's firmware has been modified so that each of these cards reports its capacity as "15.0TB" to the operating system, for a total of 30TB, even though the actual capacity of the cards is much lower. This is another giveaway; Windows reports drive capacities in gibibytes (1,024 mebibytes) or tebibytes (1,024 gibibytes), while drive manufacturers use gigabytes (1,000 megabytes) and terabytes (1,000 gigabytes). This is why a 1TB drive normally only has a reported capacity of 930-ish GB, rather than a nice round number.

Ultralight laptops are great for slipping into a bag and traveling with, and they look pretty stylish. However, a trim build often comes with trade-offs. Battery capacity is a common one, as companies struggle to fit larger batteries into machines that are under an inch thick. German PC-maker Tuxedo Computers' latest ultralight InfinityBook Pro 14 seeks to address that challenge with a massive battery.

The InfinityBook Pro 14 - Gen7 announced today comes with either big storage or a big battery. The company is selling it with the option for a 99 watt-hour (Wh) battery, which is about as big as a lithium battery can be while being allowed on an airplane (100 Wh).

Notably, the laptop uses a lithium-polymer (LiPo) battery rather than lithium-ion (Li-Ion), which is more common among laptops. LiPo batteries tend to be smaller, more stable, and have a longer lifespan, making them popular in smartphones. However, Li-Ion batteries tend to have larger capacities for their size and slower self-discharge.

Voice assistant hot words are nice when you need them and annoying when they go off accidentally. For Google, maybe a valuable signal for disabling a hot word is when you have a meeting scheduled?

Google is launching a new feature for Google Meet Hardware that will disable the "Hey, Google" hot word during a meeting and 10 minutes before. Google says, "We've heard from our customers that due to the increase in teams transitioning to hybrid meetings, the "Hey, Google" control can unintentionally be triggered during meetings. We hope this improvement helps reduce any accidental disruptions during your calls."

Google isn't yet smart enough to disable "Hey, Google" commands across all your devices, just "Google Meet Hardware." These are custom Internet appliances specifically built to do room-scale Google Meet video calls and combine speakers, microphones, cameras, and smart displays. They're primarily geared for corporate meeting rooms where one device connects the whole table to a video chat.

How to make HomeKit see more of your gadgets with Home Assistant

The Apple Home application is seen on an iPhone screen on November 15, 2017. The Home app allows people to control accessories in their home, like living room and kitchen lights, from their phone.

I've been buying and tinkering with smart home devices for years. As a result, my home network resembles a kind of Model UN of devices, bridges, protocols, assistants, and apps. I try to broker alliances, resolve disputes, and assure everybody, myself included, that this whole complicated thing is still worth it.

My salvation has been Home Assistant, a little server that gives you local control and lots of automation power. Every device in my home is connected to Home Assistant, which runs on a tiny Raspberry Pi 3B+ underneath my printer. I have a custom dashboard with all my switches, sensors, speakers, and lights. I have complete control, a custom dashboard, and infinite automations.

But sometimes, I just want to change the thermostat from the lock screen on my iPhone or tell Siri, on my phone or watch, to turn on a lamp. Yes, Home Assistant has its own app, plus a mobile-friendly website. But I also want to save my partner from learning how an entirely different, somewhat fiddly app works to access lights and switches.

Apple has asked its employees to spend more time in the office as pandemic restrictions continue to loosen, but it has again been met with organized resistance and an internal petition advocating for more time working from home, according to a report from the Financial Times.

A week ago, Apple once again announced a deadline for when its corporate employees should return to the office at least three days a week. This time, the date is September 5. Beginning that day, the company will require its employees to work onsite on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as one additional weekday that will be decided on a team-by-team basis.

This was not the first time Apple made such an announcement—though the previous attempt mandated Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays instead of offering one team-dependent flex day—but the company's leadership has repeatedly had to postpone the shift in light of new developments in the pandemic since first announcing a three-day plan in June 2021.

In April, LG reported that it received a one-time payment for patent licensing but didn’t reveal who the customers were.
