New Samsung Galaxy A54 renders leak showing four colorways

We've already seen the upcoming Galaxy A54 in some leaked renders back in November, but today a new set got out. And this time, we get to see the device in four colorways instead of one. The Galaxy A54 has been rumored to get its official announcement in January, which explains why the leaks are intensifying right now. The phone has big shoes to fill - its predecessors have been Samsung's best selling phones, so the A54 needs to take that momentum forward. Handbrake video transcoder adds official AV1 codec support in latest release

Handbrake video transcoder adds official AV1 codec support in latest release

Enlarge (credit: Alliance for Open Media)

Hardware and software support for the royalty-free AV1 video codec has been steadily building over the last couple years. Hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding is becoming standard in more GPUs, phone SoCs, and other hardware, while streaming video services like YouTube and Netflix have begun serving AV1-encoded video to devices that support it.

Open-source software projects are beginning to follow suit, too. The Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) package has been expanding its AV1 capabilities in recent releases, and now the Handbrake video transcoding app has added AV1 support as well. Version 1.6.0, released yesterday, has added support for encoding AV1 video using both CPU-based SVT-AV1 software encoding as well as via Intel's AV1-capable QuickSync video encoder included in its Arc GPUs.

Nvidia and AMD's latest RTX 4000- and RX 7000-series GPUs also include hardware encoding support for AV1, but the software needed to use it hasn't been built into Handbrake yet.

New York governor signs modified right-to-repair bill at the last minute

Computer repair concept Close-up view.Hardware.

Enlarge (credit: Getty)

New York state governor Kathy Hochul has signed the Digital Fair Repair Act into law, months after it had passed both chambers of the state's legislature with overwhelming bipartisan majorities. The bill had originally passed in June, but it was only formally sent to Hochul's desk earlier this month; the governor had until midnight on December 28th to sign the bill, veto it, or allow it to pass into law without her signature.

The Digital Fair Repair Act is the country's first right-to-repair bill that has passed through a state legislature (as opposed to being implemented via executive order), and has been hailed as "precedent-setting" by right-to-repair advocacy groups like iFixit. The law will require companies to provide the same diagnostic tools, repair manuals, and parts to the public that they provide to their own repair technicians.

But tech industry lobbyists and trade groups like TechNet had already worked to weaken the law as it made its way through the state legislature, and the bill as signed by Hochul contains even more conditions and exceptions.

iOS 16 exploit lets you set the system font to Comic Sans (and other things)

An indie app can be used to change your iPhone's default font if you haven't already installed the latest OS update.

Enlarge / An indie app can be used to change your iPhone's default font if you haven't already installed the latest OS update. (credit: Zhuowei Zhang)

If you like your iPhone but hate the San Francisco typeface, developer Zhuowei Zhang has posted a neat tool to Github—an app that can temporarily "overwrite" the iOS system font with another one, giving your phone a new, non-Apple-sanctioned look.

The app doesn't require any kind of jailbreak, but does need "iOS 16.1.2 or below" to work, since it relies on a kernel execution bug (CVE-2022-46689) patched in iOS 16.2. If you've already installed iOS 16.2—which we'd advise you to do, for security reasons—you won't be able to experiment with the hack. Any font changes will be reverted by a device reboot, and apps that don't use the default San Francisco typeface won't change.

The app includes a number of pre-installed fonts, many of which seem designed to irritate the eyes of Apple's UI designers. Comic Sans MS leads the charge in that regard, but Segoe UI (Windows' and Microsoft's default font of choice) and Samsung's "Choco Cooky" (a distant cousin of Comic Sans) are also included. Custom fonts can be installed as long as they're iOS-compatible.

New GeForce RTX 3050 variant offers the same performance but lower power use

New GeForce RTX 3050 variant offers the same performance but lower power use

Enlarge (credit: MSI)

Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3050 is no one's idea of a powerhouse, but it's a decent 1080p GPU and it's still the cheapest way to buy into Nvidia's RTX 3000-series ecosystem if you want DLSS 2.0 support or Nvidia's ray-tracing implementation. MSI has published specs for a revised version of one of its RTX 3050 GPUs (via VideoCardz), advertising the same general features and performance levels but lowering the power consumption estimate by 15 W.

The lower power consumption appears to come from the GPU's use of a smaller graphics die, called GA107. Older RTX 3050s use the same GA106 die as the RTX 3060 series, but with many of that die's 3,840 CUDA cores switched off. This can allow Nvidia to reuse partially defective GA106 dies, but as chip yields improve and the number of defective dies decreases, it either means shipping fewer RTX 3050s or putting perfectly good chips in cheaper GPUs. The GA107 die includes a maximum of 2,560 CUDA cores, and it apparently needs a bit less power than a GA106 die with the exact same number of cores enabled.

The two MSI cards in question otherwise have almost exactly the same specs, power consumption aside: an 1807 MHz boost clock, 14 Gbps of memory bandwidth thanks to GDDR6 on a 128-bit memory interface, and 2,560 CUDA cores. One other change is that the newer revision has two DisplayPorts and two HDMI ports, rather than three DisplayPorts and one HDMI port, a small change that most likely has nothing to do with the GPU change. Another is that the card now requires a 6-pin power plug, rather than an 8-pin plug.

Old dog, new trick: Microsoft tests a tabbed UI for Notepad.exe in Windows 11

Notepad, now with tabs.

Enlarge / Notepad, now with tabs. (credit: Microsoft)

Notepad is one of the very oldest Windows apps, and up until Windows 11 came out, it was one of the least-changed. It remains a barebones text editor, but it has learned some new tricks in Windows 11, picking up dark mode support, a customizable font, and a multilevel undo function. (A developer also managed to port Doom to Notepad recently, technically qualifying it as "a gaming platform.")

Another new Notepad feature is apparently being tested within Microsoft—a screenshot from an unnamed Microsoft employee shows a new tabbed user interface for the app, a feature that Microsoft also recently added to the venerable Windows Explorer. The screenshot was deleted shortly after it was posted (hilariously, it has a giant "confidential" banner running across the top of it), but it's been preserved by outlets like Windows Central that caught it before it was taken down.

Microsoft may or may not ever release this tabbed Notepad—these kinds of features often end up making their way into the public builds of Windows eventually, but even things available in Windows Insider builds of the OS don't always end up in the release version that rolls out to all PCs.

Apple’s business is under threat from a widespread coronavirus outbreak in China, with supply chain experts warning of a growing risk of months-long disruption to the production of iPhones.

The US tech giant has had to contend with more than a month of chaos at its main assembler Foxconn’s megafactory in Zhengzhou, China, known as “iPhone City,” following a Covid-19 outbreak that started in October.

Foxconn has moved some of its production to other factories across China, while Apple has worked with components suppliers to alleviate unusually long wait times—about 23 days for customers buying high-end iPhones in the US, according to research by Swiss bank UBS.

With voice assistants in trouble, Home Assistant starts a local alternative

Are cloud-based voice assistants doomed? That seems like an overly dramatic question to ask if you look at the current state of millions of users of Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple's Siri, but we're not so sure about the future. Google and Amazon have backed away from their voice assistants recently, with Amazon firing a big chunk of the Alexa team due to it losing $10 billion a year. Google isn't quite at the "fire everyone" stage, but it is reportedly less interested in supporting the Assistant on third-party devices, which would be a crippling move given Google's extremely small hardware division. Everyone built these systems assuming a revenue stream would come later, but that revenue never came, and it's starting to seem like the bubble is bursting.

One project that has a heavy dependence on Big Tech voice assistants isn't sitting around and waiting for doomsday. The team at Home Assistant is declaring 2023 "Home Assistant's year of Voice." This is basically the leading smart home project saying, "If these cloud voice assistants don't provide Big Tech with a multi-billion dollar revenue stream, that's fine, we'll do it ourselves!" There are a few nascent, open source voice assistant projects out there already, but the Home Assistant team has proven it can manage a big project. It has a huge, thriving community and enough revenue to have full-time employees, making this the new frontrunner for a viable local voice service.

Plus Home Assistant isn't starting from scratch—it went and found what it called the "most promising" open source voice assistant out there, "Rhasspy," and hired the lead developer, Mike Hansen, to work full-time on voice in Home Assistant. Hasen will now work at Nabu Casa, the Home Assistant's commercialization company. According to Home Assistant's founder, Paulus Schoutsen, "Rhasspy stands out from other open source voice projects because Mike doesn’t focus on just English. Instead, his goal is to make it work for everyone. This is going great as Rhasspy supports already 16 different languages today." The plan is to support all 62 languages the Home Assistant currently supports, but with voice, all without needing an Internet connection.

Google Pixel roadmap leaks, here's what to expect from next year until 2025

Google's products generally see a lot of leaks, something which has prompted the company itself to pre-announce upcoming products in recent years in order to steal back some of the spotlight from leaksters. But now, the leaksters have decided to up the game once more - let's see how Google can respond to this one. We're talking about a roadmap leak that reveals every smartphone the company has planned from 2023 to 2025. Leaks really don't get any bigger than this, so let's jump right in. Blu-ray player gathering dust? Turn it into a laser-scanning microscope

Blu-rays never quite managed to usurp DVDs entirely. Recent estimates, based on data gathered by Nielsen VideoScan and MediaPlayNews, suggest that as of Q2 2022, DVDs still controlled 51.4 percent of market share compared to 48.6 percent for Blu-rays. And no matter which format has the biggest slice, the physical media pie is shrinking. So, if your Blu-ray player has gone from your home theater centerpiece to a dust-gathering ornament, one clever hacker knows just what to do with it.

As spotted by Hackster.io this week, a YouTuber named Doctor Volt recently detailed their two-part journey of turning a Samsung BD-J5900 Blu-ray player into a laser-scanning microscope.

One of the laser-scanning microscope's primary advantages over optical ones is that the latter maxes out at 1,500 times magnification, as noted by Gizmodo. Doctor Volt says they aren't sure of the magnification of their DY microscope but told a commenter that "it can resolve structures of roundabout 5 micrometers."

Driver updates will fix abnormally high power use for AMD’s new RX 7900 GPUs

AMD's Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT GPUs are still fresh, and as with most products based on new architectures, there are some early bugs to work out.

A driver update released earlier this week (version 22.12.2, the second driver release for the RX 7900-series in as many weeks) addresses high power use during video playback when using the cards' built-in media decoding hardware. Other problems have been acknowledged but not fixed yet, including "high idle power [...] when using select high resolution and high refresh rate displays."

German review site Computerbase (via Tom's Hardware) noticed these issues and others when testing the cards; the site also measured significantly higher power consumption than the RX 6900 series and Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3000 and 4000 series cards when sitting idle at the Windows desktop with a pair of connected 60 Hz 4K monitors.

Samsung Galaxy A74 reportedly won't exist, A7x series ended

For quite a while now Samsung's best selling smartphone series has been the A5x. But up until now, it wasn't the top dog of the A series, that honor reserved to the A7x. Well, according to a new rumor, that's all set to change next year, as there will be no A7x device no more. That's right, the A73 was apparently the last A7x model ever made, as Samsung will not release an A74 in 2023, thus leaving the Galaxy A54 to be the headliner of the A series in both sales appeal but also sheer specs. Samsung Galaxy A73 While other upcoming Ax4 handsets have been leaked, no such thing...
