iQOO Neo 7 SE renders reveal front and back design, color options

The iQOO Neo 7 SE will miss planned December 2 launch, but we already got most of the handset's specs and this report was the missing piece of the puzzle - the design and color options. The device comes in three color options - Galaxy, Electric Blue and Interstellar Black. If we are to guess, the Galaxy variant features Fluorite AG Glass like some vivo phones. This means that the paint is UV-reactive and changes the color. Aside from the paint jobs, we can also see the "Neo OIS AI camera" inscription under the three cameras, while the bump itself is in typical iQOO fashion - square...

Modern trackball mouse wants to be a wireless solution to your ergonomic woes

Kensington SlimBlade Pro Trackball mouse on desk

Enlarge (credit: Kensington)

Trackballs aren't exactly a trendy PC accessory. Their heavy, clunky builds bring dated vibes to office setups. And despite 73 years of existence, trackballs have been usurped by modern mice and trackpads as the preferred forms of computing input. But despite their low mainstream popularity, trackball mice still hold a place in many people's hearts.

If you have a physical issue such as carpal tunnel syndrome or a repetitive strain injury that makes repeated movements difficult and/or painful, you may be one of those people holding onto a trackball mouse. While generally larger and heavier than traditional mice, trackball mice make it easier to keep your hand and arm in a neutral position and avoid pronation.

And because you don't push trackball mice around the top of your desk, they can be more accommodating of tight workspaces. Some trackball fanatics also praise the precision they can achieve with the gentle twisting of the right trackball. But there's definitely a learning curve to using them, and they aren't for everyone. And a good trackball mouse may not be as fast or precise as your best PC mouse with a traditional design.

Apple's M2 Max chip runs Geekbench on a MacBook Pro with 96GB of RAM

Apple is testing its upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the as-of-yet unreleased M2 Max processor. So far, Apple has released the new-look MacBook Air and the very-old-look 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 processor, and the M2 Pro and M2 Max laptop processors are the logical next in line (with an eventual M2 Ultra for the Mac Studio). Two Geekbench runs reveal a MacBook with an M2 Pro processor and 96GB of RAM. The figure means that Apple will likely allow buyers to configure more than the current 64GB max option. The M2 Pro processor has 12 cores, running at a max of...

Free ray-tracing update will overhaul Portal’s graphics on December 8

Valve's first-person puzzle-platformer Portal was a genuine phenomenon when it was released back in 2007, and its core gameplay mechanics—solving puzzles and thwarting enemies by shooting interconnected portals onto various surfaces—still hold up today. But the game's visuals haven't aged as well, particularly its low-resolution textures; it was built using the same game engine and some of the same assets as 2004's Half-Life 2, and there's only so much that a modern GPU can do to spruce it up.

Enter Portal with RTX, a remastering of the game with ray-tracing effects and other improvements that Nvidia says will be available for free to all Portal owners starting on December 8. The update was originally announced in September alongside the RTX 4000-series GPUs. Developed by Lightspeed Studios, Portal with RTX doesn't just add fancy lighting effects to the original but also includes "hand-crafted hi-res physically-based textures" and "enhanced high-poly models" that substantially overhaul the aging game's visuals for the modern era.

As a DirectX 9 game from early in the Xbox 360 lifespan, the original Portal runs well on just about anything, including old Intel-integrated GPUs. But Portal RTX's system requirements are a lot higher; Nvidia lists the RTX 3060 as the minimum recommended GPU and says it can achieve "playable" 30 FPS frame rates at 1080p with DLSS enabled. Jumping to 60 FPS at 1080p requires an RTX 3080 with DLSS enabled, while hitting 60 FPS at 4K will require at least an RTX 4080 with DLSS 3 enabled. The CPU and RAM requirements also climb along with the GPU requirements (check the Nvidia-provided system requirements table below).

OnePlus Nord CE 3 renders emerge

The OnePlus Nord series has solidified itself in the midrange segment and the next device due to launch in the succession is the Nord CE 3. Luckily for us, prominent leakster OnLeaks and the folks over at 91 mobiles shared some detailed renders of the device alongside its expected spec sheet. Nord CE 3 will usher in a new design language for the OnePlus Nord series with a flat design and two large circular cutouts for its three rear cameras. The flat edges give the Nord CE 3 some shades of the OnePlus X which was the brand’s first foray in the midrange segment back in 2015. The phone...

Influencers were paid by Google to promote a Pixel phone they’d never used

The Pixel 4.

Enlarge / The Pixel 4. (credit: Ron Amadeo)

Google and iHeartMedia—the US's biggest radio station operator—are being hit with a false advertising lawsuit for ads they ran about the Pixel 4 (which we found to be overpriced and full of half-working experiments). The FTC and four states say the companies aired "nearly 29,000 deceptive endorsements by radio personalities" during 2019 and 2020, with Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine saying that “Google and iHeartMedia paid influencers to promote products they never used, showing a blatant disrespect for truth-in-advertising rules.” The two companies have settled the lawsuit and will be required to pay $9.4 million in penalties.

Google's ads had on-air personalities give first-hand accounts of how much they liked the Pixel 4, but, to quote the FTC's press release, "the on-air personalities were not provided with Pixel 4s before recording and airing the majority of the ads and therefore did not own or regularly use the phones." Therefore the first-person claims made in the ads, like, “It’s my favorite phone camera out there, especially in low light, thanks to Night Sight Mode,” “I’ve been taking studio-like photos of everything,” and “It’s also great at helping me get stuff done, thanks to the new voice activated Google Assistant that can handle multiple tasks at once,” can't be true.

It seems like everything would have been fine if these ads weren't in the first person. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey explains: “It is common sense that people put more stock in first-hand experiences. Consumers expect radio advertisements to be truthful and transparent about products, not misleading with fake endorsements. Today’s settlement holds Google and iHeart accountable for this deceptive ad campaign and ensures compliance with state and federal law moving forward.”

Used thin client PCs are an unsexy, readily available Raspberry Pi alternative

This <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/05/lenovo-bumps-x1-extreme-to-i9-gtx-1650-introduces-new-mainstream-thinkbooks/">ThinkCentre M90n-1 Nano from 2019</a>, passively cooled with a big heatsink, was $145 when the author last looked on eBay. It's not a Raspberry Pi, and it looks like Batman's reception desk system, but it can do the work.

"Raspberry Pi boards are hard to get, probably also next year," says Andreas Spiess, single-board enthusiast and YouTuber, in his distinctive Swiss accent. He's not wrong. Spiess says he and his fellow Pi devotees need "a strategy to survive" without new boards, so he suggests looking in one of the least captivating, most overlooked areas of computing: used, corporate-minded thin client PCs.

Andreas Spiess' suggestion to "survive" the Raspberry Pi shortage: cheap thin clients.

Spiess' Pi replacements, suggested and refined by many of his YouTube commenters and Patreon subscribers, are Fujitsu Futros, Lenovo ThinkCentres, and other small systems (some or all of which could be semantically considered "thick clients" or simply "mini PCs," depending on your tastes and retro-grouch sensibilities). They're the kind of systems you can easily find used on eBay, refurbished on Amazon Renewed, or through other enterprise and IT asset disposition sources. They're typically in good shape, given their use and environment. And compared to single-board enthusiast systems, many more are being made and replaced each year.

They've always been there, of course, but it makes more sense to take another look at them now. "Back to the future," as Spiess puts it (in an analogy we're not entirely sure works).

The listing also reveals the Galaxy M54 5G will run Android 13 with OneUI 5 and have up to 8GB of RAM (it's very likely that there will be a 6GB version as well). The listed chipset has a quad-core processor with two clusters - 4 cores running at 2.4GHz, and another 4 at 2.0GHz. The run means that the phone is coming soon, though it may arrive in early 2023. Regulatory filings suggest Nvidia’s scrapped RTX 4080 will return as the “4070 Ti”

Regulatory filings suggest Nvidia’s scrapped RTX 4080 will return as the “4070 Ti”

Enlarge (credit: Nvidia)

Last month, Nvidia took the unusual step of "unlaunching" a previously announced product. The 12GB version of the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card was, by the company's admission, "not named right" and was delayed and rebranded to avoid confusion with the 16GB version of the RTX 4080 that launched. Besides having less RAM, the 12GB version of the RTX 4080 also offered less memory bandwidth and fewer GPU cores than the 16GB version.

Nvidia didn't announce exactly what branding it would use for the revived RTX 4080, but regulatory filings submitted by Gigabyte (as reported by VideoCardz) suggest that the company has settled on calling it the "4070 Ti."

This isn't guaranteed to be the actual name—regulatory filings like this can be placeholders rather than actual products—but this branding would be more consistent with how Nvidia has named past GPU generations. The xx80 cards usually use the same physical GPU die as the flagship xx90 cards but run at lower clock speeds and with parts of the die switched off; this allows Nvidia to use GPU dies with defects rather than tossing them out. The xx70 cards generally use a smaller, less-performant GPU die based on the same architecture.

Google's "Project Zero" team of security analysts wants to rid the world of zero-day security vulnerabilities, and that means it spends time calling out slacking companies on its blog. The group's latest post is a bit of friendly fire aimed at the Android and Pixel teams, which Project Zero says aren't dealing with bugs in the ARM GPU driver quickly enough.

In June 2022, Project Zero researcher Maddie Stone detailed an in-the-wild exploit for the Pixel 6, where bugs in the ARM GPU driver could let a non-privileged user get write access to read-only memory. Another Project Zero researcher, Jann Horn, spent the next three weeks finding related vulnerabilities in the driver. All told, the post says these bugs could allow "an attacker with native code execution in an app context [to] gain full access to the system, bypassing Android's permissions model and allowing broad access to user data."

Project Zero says it reported these issues to ARM "between June and July 2022" and that ARM fixed the issues "promptly" in July and August, issuing a security bulletin (CVE-2022-36449) and publishing fixed source code. But these actively exploited vulnerabilities haven't been patched for users. The groups dropping the ball are apparently Google and various Android OEMs, as Project Zero says that months after ARM fixed the vulnerabilities, "all of our test devices which used Mali are still vulnerable to these issues. CVE-2022-36449 is not mentioned in any downstream security bulletins."

Motorola Moto X40 with SD 8 Gen 2 breaks AnTuTu high score

The Motorola Moto X40, likely to be known as the Edge 40 Pro in western markets, still awaits its release. We've had numerous reports and leaks and we know for a fact that it's running the recently announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset from Qualcomm. Now Lenovo's General Manager of the mobile business arm shared its AnTuTu score. The 1,312,901 result is around 30% higher than what we get on Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered smartphones. Even the Plus variant of the SoC barely gets past the 1 million points barrier. In fact, some handsets post less than that. This seems to be in line with...

Android TV will require App Bundles in 2023, should reduce app size by 20%

Android TV is going to be less storage-greedy in the future. Google has announced that Android's space-saving app file format, Android App Bundles (AABs), is finally going to be the standard on Android TV. By May 2023—that's in six months—Google will require all Android TV apps to switch to the new file format, which can cut down on app storage requirements by 20 percent.

Storage for Android TV is always tough because hardware manufacturers want to make smart TV and set-top-box hardware as cheaply as possible, and that often means shipping with a minimal amount of storage. Google says that "in 2022, smartphones often have a minimum storage size of 64GB, but smart TVs have an average of just 8GB." Google itself is actually a big offender here, with the Google Chromecast with Google TV shipping with only 8GB of storage. That's nowhere near enough, and many people run out of storage on the new Chromecast with only the bare minimum of content apps installed. There are 10,000 Android TV apps out there, with some of the biggest reaching 10GB+, but most Android TV users can't install them.

Android App Bundles won't be a magic bullet for poorly designed devices with insufficient storage, but every little bit will help. Android App Bundles were announced with Android 9 in 2018 as a way to save device storage by breaking an app up into modules, rather than one big monolithic APK (the old Android app format) with every possible piece of data. Android apps support a ton of different languages, display resolutions, and CPU architectures, but each individual device only needs to cherry pick a few of those options to work. Android App Bundles integrate with the Play Store to create a dynamic delivery system for each of these modules. Your phone communicates which modules it needs to the Play Store, and Google's servers bundled up an appropriate package and sent it to your device. It's even possible for developers to move some lesser-used app functionality into a bundle that can be downloaded on the fly if a user needs it.

LG continues diversifying OLED monitor options; lists 27-incher for $1,000

LG continues to show a commitment to diversifying OLED monitor options. And that's particularly exciting when it comes to users seeking smaller sizes and lower prices. The company recently listed a 26.5-inch OLED monitor for $1,000 that offers more speed than most people need but adds variety to today's scant selection of desktop-size OLED monitors.

As spotted by a few sites, including Wccftech on Sunday, LG has listed the 26.5-inch UltraGear 27GR95QE-B; however, it doesn't seem available to purchase online in the US yet. We reached out to LG about US availability and will update this article if the company responds.

The monitor prioritizes pushing frames over pixel count, sporting a 2560×1400 resolution and a 240 Hz refresh rate. LG's gaming monitor also has an aggressively fast 0.03 ms gray-to-gray response time, plus Nvidia G-Sync Compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium for fighting screen tears. This is a screen built for gamers who would rather have fast-paced action that looks super-smooth than the sharpest display. And if you're not convinced of this screen's gamer heritage, just check out the hexagonal RGB lighting area on the monitor's backside:

Realme GT Neo2, GT, and Narzo 50 get Android 13 betas

Today Realme's official Twitter account for India announced that it's expanding the beta program for its Android 13 update to three more devices: we're talking about the Realme GT, the Realme GT Neo2, and the Narzo 50 5G. As usual with Realme early access builds, you'll need to apply to be part of the beta program. Thankfully, that's pretty easy. First you need to ensure that your handset is on the latest stable software version. Then head into Settings > Software Update and tap on the gear icon in the top right corner. After that, tap on Trial Version > Apply Now. That's where you need to...

Amazon Alexa is a “colossal failure,” on pace to lose $10 billion this year

Amazon is going through the biggest layoffs in the company's history right now, with a plan to eliminate some 10,000 jobs. One of the areas hit hardest is the Amazon Alexa voice assistant unit, which is apparently falling out of favor at the e-commerce giant. That's according to a report from Business Insider, which details "the swift downfall of the voice assistant and Amazon's larger hardware division."

Alexa has been around for 10 years and has been a trailblazing voice assistant that was copied quite a bit by Google and Apple. Alexa never managed to create an ongoing revenue stream, though, so Alexa doesn't really make any money. The Alexa division is part of the "Worldwide Digital" group along with Amazon Prime video, and Business Insider says that division lost $3 billion in just the first quarter of 2022, with "the vast majority" of the losses blamed on Alexa. That is apparently double the losses of any other division, and the report says the hardware team is on pace to lose $10 billion this year. It sounds like Amazon is tired of burning through all that cash.

A division in crisis

The BI report spoke with "a dozen current and former employees on the company's hardware team," who described "a division in crisis." Just about every plan to monetize Alexa has failed, with one former employee calling Alexa "a colossal failure of imagination," and "a wasted opportunity." This month's layoffs are the end result of years of trying to turn things around. Alexa was given a huge runway at the company, back when it was reportedly the "pet project" of former CEO Jeff Bezos. An all-hands crisis meeting took place in 2019 to try to turn the monetization problem around, but that was fruitless. By late 2019, Alexa saw a hiring freeze, and Bezos started to lose interest in the project around 2020. Of course, Amazon now has an entirely new CEO, Andy Jassy, who apparently isn't as interested in protecting Alexa.

Google’s Black Friday deals: It’s hard to say no to a $300 Pixel 6a

Google’s Black Friday deals: It’s hard to say no to a $300 Pixel 6a

Enlarge (credit: Google)

This week is everyone's favorite shopping holiday: Black Friday. Google's Black Friday deals are already running on the Google Store and Amazon. Many of these represent the first discounts for Google's new hardware announced last month.

First up, we have phones, with Google offering $150 off the Pixel 7 Pro (Google, Amazon) and Pixel 6a (Google, Amazon), and $100 off the Pixel 7 (Google, Amazon). That Pixel 6a deal is a serious head-turner: $150 off the already-good $449 price makes for a $300 device that will meet most people's basic smartphone needs. Remember that the Pixel 6a has a near flagship-class Google Tensor 1 SoC. With Google (and really every other Android SoC vendor) not doing much performance-wise year over year, you'll get nearly the same benchmarks from the Pixel 6a as the normally $900 Pixel 7 Pro, but now for a third of the price. It has a great camera, water resistance, Wi-Fi 6e support, and a fast and clean build of Android with day-one updates. You're not going to wow anyone with a 60 Hz display, but if you just need a basic smartphone, this is a steal for $300.

The Pixel 7 Pro for $150 off is also a great deal. That makes for $750 for a phone with all the fancy extras, like a 120 Hz display and wireless charging.

LG reveals vibrating speakers as ultra-thin alternative to traditional car audio

LG Display will commercialize thin, vibrating speakers for cars in the first half of 2023, the company announced today. The Thin Actuator Sound Solution has similar dimensions to a passport and forgoes many of the bulkier parts of typical car speakers.

LG Display is known for developing display panel technologies and providing them to various companies, including the consumer LG brand. Its new speaker doesn't use a cone, magnet, or voice coil and doesn't require a speaker grille. Instead, the speaker relies on what the company described as a "film-type exciter technology," which vibrates off display panels "and various materials inside the car body" to create "3D" sound that LG Display claims is as good as what traditional car speakers produce.

LG even worked with a "global audio company" to develop the speakers, but we can't tell you if that's impressive or not because LG Display didn't specify the partner's name.

Nokia X30 in for review

We first got our hands on the Nokia X30 at IFA 2022 in Berlin, and now the phone landed at our office for a full review. We've got the Ice White color version, but there's one more option - Cloudy Blue. The Nokia X30 comes in a recycled box with the usual paperwork, SIM tool, and a USB-C to USB-C cable. It doesn't come bundled with the power adapter, though, so you'll have to buy one separately if you don't already own a compatible charger.
