Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro pre-orders start in India on October 6

If you're in India and want to purchase a high-end Google smartphone, you're about to get lucky. After a hiatus, the company has decided to offer its high-end device range in the subcontinent once more. Google has already confirmed that both the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro will be sold in India. Sometimes, companies launch new smartphones in India later than elsewhere, but this thankfully won't be the case for the new Pixels. Today Google has revealed that pre-orders will start for the two handsets on October 6 in India. That's the day of their unveiling event, and it's also the day on...

Stadia controllers could become e-waste unless Google issues Bluetooth update

Ars originally liked the Stadia controller, describing it as "solidly built, with springy, responsive inputs." It could still be that way without a giant USB cord if Google unlocked its full Bluetooth capabilities.

Google's Stadia game-streaming service will die a nearly inevitable death early next year. Google is refunding players the cost of all their hardware and game purchases. But, so far, Google is also leaving Stadia players with controllers that, while once costing $70, will soon do less than a $20 Bluetooth gamepad.

Stadia's controllers were custom-made to connect directly to the Internet, reducing lag and allowing for instant firmware updates and (sometimes painful) connections to smart TVs. There's Bluetooth inside the Stadia controller, but it's only used when you're setting up Stadia, either with a TV, a computer with the Chrome browser, or a Chromecast Ultra.

The Google Store's page for the Stadia controller states in a footnote: "Product contains Bluetooth Classic radio. No Bluetooth Classic functionality is enabled at this time. Bluetooth Classic may be implemented at a later date." (Bluetooth Classic is a more traditional version of Bluetooth than modern low-energy or mesh versions.)

Oppo A77s hangs out at Geekbench prior to its launch in India

Oppo is used to churning out A-series mid-rangers like there's no tomorrow, and the next installment in the series will be the A77s, which rumor has it should launch in India very, very soon. It was seen in leaked renders a few days ago, when a lot of its specs were also outed. Now, it looks like someone in possession of a prototype decided to have it run Geekbench, and you can probably imagine what ensued - there's a record of its run in the benchmark's database, and as usual that reveals (or rather, in this case, confirms) a couple of specs. Surprising no one who's read our...

The rest of Intel Arc’s A700-series GPU prices: A750 lands Oct. 12 below $300

Intel arrives at a crucial sub-$300 price for its medium-end GPU option. But will that bear out as a worthwhile price compared to its performance?

Enlarge / Intel arrives at a crucial sub-$300 price for its medium-end GPU option. But will that bear out as a worthwhile price compared to its performance? (credit: Intel)

Intel's highest-end graphics card lineup is approaching its retail launch, and that means we're getting more answers to crucial market questions of prices, launch dates, performance, and availability. Today, Intel answered more of those A700-series GPU questions, and they're paired with claims that every card in the Arc A700 series punches back at Nvidia's 18-month-old RTX 3060.

After announcing a $329 price for its A770 GPU earlier this week, Intel clarified it would launch three A700 series products on October 12: The aforementioned Arc A770 for $329, which sports 8GB of GDDR6 memory; an additional Arc A770 Limited Edition for $349, which jumps up to 16GB of GDDR6 at slightly higher memory bandwidth and otherwise sports otherwise identical specs; and the slightly weaker A750 Limited Edition for $289.

If you missed the memo on that sub-$300 GPU when it was announced, the A750 LE is essentially a binned version of the A770's chipset with 87.5 percent of the shading units and ray tracing (RT) units turned on, along with an ever-so-slightly downclocked boost clock (2.05 GHz, compared to 2.1 GHz on both A770 models).

Amazon’s Astro robot still isn’t ready for prime time

Amazon Astro robot in a living room

Enlarge / A limited number of customers have had Astro in their living room. (credit: Amazon)

Amazon's press-only hardware event today included reveals of the Kindle Scribe, Eero extending mesh networks with Echo, updated Echo Dot and Studio speakers, plus an Echo dashboard accessory. Like last year, there was also talk of the Amazon Astro robot that can roll around homes equipped with a digital smile, camera, and microphones. This time, Amazon detailed new and planned features for Astro; however, a year after its initial announcement, Astro remains an invite-only experimental product.

Astro is a 17.3×9.8-inch robot, with Alexa, a smart display, microphones, speakers, night-vision LEDs, a periscope camera, cupholder, and visual simultaneous location and mapping (V-SLAM) for navigating around people's homes and unexpected obstacles, like a dropped item. You need to request an invite to pay $1,000 for the bot.

Amazon appears to be accepting invite requests while developing new features ahead of expected mass availability, whenever that may be. Amazon's event today didn't provide any updates to Astro seeing general availability (we asked Amazon and will update this story if we get any response).

Amazon’s $340 Kindle Scribe is its first e-reader with handwriting and pen support

Earlier this month, Amazon announced an update to its entry-level Kindle, but at the company's product event today, the focus was on a new flagship product that includes handwriting support and a stylus—not a new feature for e-readers but a first for the Kindle lineup.

The Kindle Scribe is a 10.2-inch e-ink e-reader that includes a pen for taking notes, annotating documents, or general scribbling. The device will start at $340 for 16GB of storage and a Basic Pen accessory, and it's available for preorder today. It will begin shipping at some unspecified date later this year.

The Scribe looks like a blown-up version of the Kindle Oasis, with a large bezel on one side to make it easier to hold one-handed without touching the screen, though it lacks the Oasis' physical page-turn buttons. Foldable leather and fabric cases can protect the front and back of the Scribe when closed or prop the tablet up at a couple of different angles when folded. Like other modern Kindles, the Scribe boasts a 300 PPI pixel density to make text and handwriting look sharp.

Enlarge / The people in this room are smiling because they know that little Wi-Fi hub on the ceiling could power a whole bunch of cameras and access points over Ethernet.

Amazon-owned Eero announced today that its latest Echo devices can serve as Wi-Fi mesh extenders for Eero networks, using built-in hardware to expand a network up to 1,000 square feet.

Eero will also add "Internet Backup" for Eero Plus (formerly Secure+) subscribers, allowing Eero networks to automatically use a hotspot or nearby Wi-Fi during an Internet outage and use it to keep select devices connected until a dedicated connection returns. And the company announced power-over-Ethernet devices aimed at enterprise, business, and serious networking enthusiasts.

Eero Built-In, which made its debut in the Ring Alarm Pro last year, will be available on the latest (fifth-generation) Echo Dot and Echo Dot with Clock devices and the fourth-generation Echo, expected to be unveiled today. Mesh capabilities will also come to fourth-generation Echo Dot and Echo Dot with Clock devices through an over-the-air update, Eero says. (Essentially, if your Echo device is spherical, a clock, or announced today, it's likely to have built-in Eero).

Apple backtracks, will extend Stage Manager multitasking support to older iPads

True external display support is coming to M1-powered iPads in iPadOS 16.

Enlarge / True external display support is coming to M1-powered iPads in iPadOS 16. (credit: Apple)

When Apple delayed iPadOS 16 in August, one of the primary culprits was the new "Stage Manager" multitasking feature. Stage Manager was meant to extend a new multi-window multitasking model to the iPad, but developers and people who cover Apple for a living have been complaining about stability and unpredictable behavior for months, problems that were still present even in recent betas. Controversially, the feature also required a recent M1-powered iPad Pro or Air to work.

In the beta of iPadOS 16.1 shipped today, Apple is narrowing Stage Manager's scope and adjusting its system requirements. According to an Apple statement provided to Engadget, the company "worked hard to find a way to deliver a single screen version [of Stage Manager]" for users of the 2018- and 2020-model iPad Pros.

These models have less RAM and a less-powerful processor than the M1 iPad Pros and the fourth-generation iPad Air. But with their four efficiency cores and four performance cores, both the A12X and A12Z chips were clearly dry-runs for the M1, and they're still powerful enough to run iPadOS and its apps well—it's nice to see them pick up support for Stage Manager, too.

Early-adopter tax is in full force for the first batch of AM5 motherboards

Enlarge / The MSI MEG X670E Godlike raises interesting questions, like, "could God make a motherboard so expensive that even He could not afford it?" (credit: MSI)

Building a PC around a new processor is expensive at the best of times, and that's triple-true of AMD's new Ryzen 7000 chips. AMD has started with its $300-and-up high-end chips, leaving mid-range options until next year. The CPUs only support DDR5 RAM, which is still more expensive than DDR4 at the same capacities. And the first round of motherboards that include the new AM5 CPU socket are here, and they're pretty expensive.

The cheapest motherboard currently available from the likes of Newegg and Micro Center is the ASRock X670E PG Lightning, which, despite being the least expensive motherboard available, is an X670E board that will support PCIe 5.0 GPUs when they eventually arrive (even the newly announced GeForce RTX 4000-series still uses PCIe 4.0). The motherboard is missing a few features we like to see—no built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, limited audio outputs, relatively small heatsinks for the voltage-regulator modules (VRMs) and other components—but it does have four M.2 SSD slots of varying speeds and plenty of hookups for case fans and front USB ports.

If it's something you care about, the cheapest X670E board with Wi-Fi is also one of ASRock's, the X670E Pro RS, available for $280 at Newegg and Micro Center.

GeForce GPUs are slowing down after installing the Windows 11 2022 Update

Some users of Nvidia's GeForce graphics cards are noticing severe performance issues after installing the Windows 11 2022 Update (aka Windows 11 22H2) that Microsoft released to the public earlier this week. As reported by Bleeping Computer, affected users have experience stuttering, inconsistent framerates, and slowdowns, even on fast PCs with modern components.

Nvidia says the problem is caused by some new Windows graphics debugging features that are enabled by mistake.

The company publicly acknowledged the issue and released a new beta version of the GeForce Experience software package that it says should fix the issue. This implies that the problem is with Nvidia's add-on software rather than the GeForce drivers themselves; if you install the drivers without the GeForce Experience software, you may not have noticed the slowdown in the first place.

Google Pixel Tablet spec details leak

Back in May at its I/O developer conference, Google teased a whole bunch of different devices coming in the future - most of those, like the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Watch, will be made official at an event on October 6. But there was also the Pixel Tablet, which is only coming next year. That didn't stop the search giant from revealing the render you can see below. Today some spec details of the Pixel Tablet have been outed, as it has apparently entered the engineering validation test (EVT) phase and some units have been shipped to India for that purpose. Somewhere along the way,...

Google will start assimilating Fitbit accounts next year

The word

Google's acquisition of Fitbit closed in early 2021, but we haven't seen much in the way of changes yet. 9to5Google spotted a big upcoming change posted on Fitbit's help site: account migrations! A new Fitbit help page has outlined the plan for the coming Google account migration. If this goes anything like the Nest account migrations (done by the same Google Hardware division), Fitbit users are in for a wild ride.

Google's support page says, "We plan to enable use of Fitbit with a Google account sometime in 2023" and that at that point "some uses of Fitbit will require a Google account, including to sign up for Fitbit or activate newly released Fitbit devices and features." That means optional account migrations for existing users in 2023. Google also says, "Support of Fitbit accounts will continue until at least early 2025. After support of Fitbit accounts ends, a Google account will be required to use Fitbit. We'll be transparent with our customers about the timeline for ending Fitbit accounts through notices within the Fitbit app, by email, and in help articles."

The merging of accounts will, of course, mean that Google gets your health data. Google says that "you’ll need to consent to transfer your Fitbit user data from Fitbit to Google" and that "Google will then provide you with Fitbit under Google’s Terms of ServicePrivacy Policy, and binding commitments for Fitbit." Part of those EU commitments, which Google chose to apply to the whole world, is that "Google will not use Fitbit health and wellness data for Google Ads."

After pushing AV1 codec, Google goes after Dolby with HDR and audio standards

Google can do basically whatever it wants regarding video and web standards. YouTube is the world's most popular video site. Chrome is the world's most popular browser. Android is the world's most popular operating system. Anything Google wants to roll out can immediately have a sizable user base of clients, servers, and content. From there, it's just a matter of getting a few partners to tag along. This is how Google's next-generation AV1 video codec is being rolled out, and next, Google is setting its sights on HDR and 3D audio standards.

Protocol's Janko Roettgers has a report on "Project Caviar," Google's plan to take on Dolby and create royalty-free alternatives to its HDR standard (Dolby Vision) and its 3D audio standard (Dolby Atmos). Dolby's old-media business model relies on royalty fees from hardware manufacturers and support from content creators. The company's technology is deeply embedded in movie theaters, Blu-rays, and more modern streaming companies like Apple are big backers of Dolby technology. That all costs money, though, and Protocol's report says $50 streaming sticks end up having around $2 of that price tag go to Dolby.

Surround sound has been a movie feature forever with various numbers of front, back, and side speakers, but Dolby Atmos adds height into the equation. If you take a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup—that's three front speakers, two back, a subwoofer, and for 7.1, two side speakers—Dolby Atmos adds four overhead speakers into the mix, allowing sound to pan overhead of the viewer. Atmos is supported by Apple, Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+.
