Weekly poll results: Sony Xperia 1 VII has stalwart supporters but the high price will deter most

The Sony Xperia 1 VII will not help Sony grow out of its niche market position – last week’s poll makes it pretty clear that £1,400/€1,500 is too much for a non-folding flagship, especially one with only 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage. The Mark 7 offers a unique combination of features, but as one commenter points out, many of them aren’t exactly expensive – the microSD card slot and the 3.5mm headphone jack don’t add much to the production cost. The same goes for the flat display without a notch or punch hole. To be clear, while some people really value those features, they don’t justify a...

Trump's tariffs will stay in effect until June 9, Apple still in limbo

Shortly after Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs were announced, the court blocked them, along with the ones imposed when he stepped into office. However, after a subsequent appeal, the tariffs are back in effect, at least until June 9. According to the court, the Emergency Economic Powers Act doesn't grant the president power to control trade. That's Congress territory. But after the ruling today, the tariffs are reinstated until June 9, when both parties are supposed to file their arguments regarding the case, and only then will the court give a permanent ruling. Apple is one of the...

Redmi Pad 2 pricing leaks through retailer listings

Earlier this month we caught our first glimpse of the upcoming Redmi Pad 2, the successor to the original Redmi Pad from 2022 - this one has definitely been a (very) long time coming. Today its pricing has been outed through a number of retailer listings in Europe. These show that the Redmi Pad 2 will go for €199 with 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and Wi-Fi connectivity. That's the base model. Redmi Pad 2 European retailer listings If you want 4G access too, it looks like you'll need to pay €299, but that version also gets you 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, both of which...

Oppo Find N5 Flip design possibly outed by patent filing

Oppo's last flip-style foldable was the Find N3 Flip, launched in 2023. Since then, nothing - it's been crickets only on this front, even though the company did come out with the book-style Find N5 already. Now, the design of what could be the upcoming Find N5 Flip may have been uncovered in a patent filing at the WIPO. This filing basically shows the entire design for a flip-style foldable, and it's not one that Oppo's used so far. That said, it is immediately identifiable as a member of Oppo's Flip line, with the cover screen to one side and the cameras arranged next to it. It has...

Google Pixel 10 series will keep this important connectivity feature despite modem swap

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Lite seemingly spotted in the Geekbench database

Back in April, we heard a rumor that Samsung was working on the Galaxy Tab S10 Lite, which would be the cheapest Tab S10. This was said to be using the Exynos 1380 SoC. Now, a Samsung tablet with the model number SM-X406B has been spotted in the Geekbench online database, and wouldn't you know it - it's powered by the Exynos 1380. Since Samsung uses the "X" prefix in its model numbers for the Galaxy Tab S line, this is pretty obviously the Tab S10 Lite. A merger between Samsung's LSI and Foundry divisions is getting increasingly likely

Samsung's chip-manufacturing business isn't doing great, and poor yield is partially to blame. Even the Galaxy S25 series switched entirely to Snapdragon this year. Though the Exynos will return to the S26 series if the rumors are correct. The issues with Samsung's LSI (the chip design arm) run so deep that reports suggest a merger between Samsung LSI and another division, most likely Foundry. The initial rumors suggest that Samsung is planning to merge Samsung MX (Mobile Experience) and LSI, but the latest development is pointing to a Foundry-LSI merger instead. A South Korean news...

Analysts reveal that vendors sold 32.4 million units, down from 33.1 million in Q1 2024, but about 32% of those sales were premium phones priced above €800. Weekly poll results: the Galaxy S25 Edge needed a bigger battery, lower price to be successful

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge could be the herald of a new trend in high-end smartphones – a focus on a thin and light design. However, last week’s poll clearly shows that there are several key issues that need to be addressed before this trend gets off the ground and the S25 Edge isn’t the model that can see it done. The first issue is one that can be corrected – at $1,100/€1,250/₹110,000 it’s just too expensive. We don’t doubt that there will be discounts and deals down the line, but how low will it go? Low enough to convince nearly 23% of voters to reconsider? That remains to be...
